Motorama 2004
Motorama was a long trip, and it was a bit disappointing that we lost ALL of our matches but I learned a few things and hopefully we'll be able to get our bots back together and fight again soon.
Micro-Wedge's Fights
Fight 1
Micro-Wedge VS. Dr. Super Brain
This was a very short match and I wish it would have gone a different way but, there wasn't anything I could do since my brother (matt) was driving. This was the very first match he had ever fought and to make matters worse, he had only had a few minutes of drive practice with the robot he was driving. Anyway, Dr. Super Brain is a bot that has a lifter for a weapon, matt drove towards Dr. Super Brain's lifter hoping to be able to mess the lifter arm up. Instead, when micro-wedge's blade hit the lifter; Micro-Wedge's front end flew up in the air just enough for Dr. Super Brain to get up underneath and, Dr. Super brain flipped Micro-Wedge. Dr. Super Brain won the match. Below is a picture after this fight.
Micro-Wedge was flipped after he tried to go after Dr. Super Brain's lifter.
Fight 2
Micro-Wedge VS. Phrazberry
I truly think that this was one of the coolest matches that any of our bots have ever fought. Phrazberry is a full body spinner made out of titanium, and a brushless motor for power to the weapon. The match consisted of two hits from phrazberry, after that, Micro-wedge "Kicked the bucket." At the start of the match, matt tried to spin up the weapon but it wasn't going for some reason, the after about 4 seconds into the match, Phrazberry hit micro-wedge, right on the blade. This was a huge hit that surely got micro-wedge's slow blade moving! Then Phrazberry goes for another hit and catches micro-wedge right on the side and chips the blade a bit which rips the saw blade and motor clean out of micro-wedge and into the lexan wall in which it got stuck. Unfortunately we had the wires going to the weapon motor wired under the wires to our battery pack and the connector plug to the battery pack got pulled apart and we lost power. Phrazberry won the fight. Below are two pictures of this fight, on the left shows Micro-Wedge and Phrazberry before the fight, on the right shows Micro-Wedge and Phrazberry after the fight.
Before After
Mini-Doom's Fights
Fight 1
Mini-Doom VS. Bipolar
This fight is a good example of how what I learned at Motorama, as you will soon find out what I mean. At the beginning of the match I was totally focused on aggression since i knew my opponent was a full body spinner with an outer-body shell that is run from two Astro motors. I revved up mini-dooms blade with the intent to destroy, and then i saw that Bipolar's weapon was spinning up very slowly, so i took advantage of the opportunity and ran straight for bipolar just about as fast as possible. After a very good hit delivered to bipolar, I noticed that my blade wouldn't start back up so I started ramming and ramming bipolar trying my best to show control and aggression. Bipolar's blade still wasn't spinning very fast, certainly not enough to do any damage either. So I kept on running around and ramming. Soon I noticed the robot was getting unresponsive. Turns out that Mini-Doom's wheels were coming off of the threaded shaft of my Black and Decker drill drive system because I forgot to tighten the set screw the holds the wheel on! Soon Mini-Doom was a sitting duck and I was declared immobile. Bipolar won the match. Below is a picture of the damage I did with the lawnmower blade with that one hit that I got in.
The holes are there for weight purposes but you can see were Mini-Doom cut through the side of one of the holes. (Just imagine what type of damage Mini-Doom could have done if the blade would have kept on spinning.)
Fight 2
Mini-Doom VS. Sloth
How could I have been any more unfortunate than to draw Bipolar and then Sloth, they are both really good spinners. Anyway, just the thought of having to fight sloth was chilling, there was hardly anyplace on sloth that i could get my lawnmower blade at and, Sloth's weapon ran off of an EV Warrior motor which was geared down 3 times. Anyhow I managed to survive. At the beginning of the match we both started our spinning weapons up and fought it out. I decided that there was a small place near the corner of Sloth's wedge that I could hit so that was my first target. I got a good hit in but once again the blade stopped moving, there was no way that I was going to even try to get close enough to Sloth to get a good ram in so i just danced around hoping that the wheels wouldn't come off and that maybe sloth's blade will slow down where I can push Sloth into the wall. Sloth had lots of radio interference throughout the match but anytime that Mini-Doom got close to Sloth it got hit hard. So I just drove around in circles the rest of the match, Avoiding Sloth's blade of death. It came down to a judge's decision but Sloth was declared the winner. Below is a picture of the damage Mini-Doom did to Sloth's Aluminum Armor.
Robot Assault
At RA we were only able to bring one of our robots and that bot was Worst Nightmare. Worst Nightmare fought 4 matches being defeated in the last one against Fruitcake.
Fight 1
Worst Nightmare VS. Buzzkill
The fight against Buzzkill was very exciting because Worst Nightmare got threw all over the place. Buzzkill has a very good flipping weapon and Worst Nightmare had a slow servo powered lifter that can't even pick up a pound. The entire match was basically Buzzkill getting a bunch of good attacks on Worst Nightmare. I didn't get one single good shot a Buzzkill the entire match. Worst Nightmare got flipped 31 times according to Alex Grant's counting and also hit the roof of the arena twice. Worst Nightmare Lost the match.
Fight 2
Worst Nightmare VS. Aim and Maim
This fight started out very competitive as I tested my good driving skills against Aim and Maim. Luckily the front of Aim and Maim was rather lightweight and I was able to get up underneath it and push Aim and Maim a bit, but it didn't matter much when Aim and Maim started trying to ram Worst Nightmare and started going to fast and hit the wall while doing a wheelie and got flipped over. I tried to be fair and flip Aim and Maim back over but the servo wasn't powerful enough. Worst Nightmare won the match.
Fight 3
Worst Nightmare VS. Coffee Grinder
I didn't like this match much because once again I got lucky and it just didn't seem fair since I had such a crappy bot. At the beginning of the match we were having interference problems and that probably contributed to the outcome of the match. Coffee Grinder has a very good spinning weapon and was able to cause some good damage my plexi-glass armor. Coffee Grinder tore up our lifter real bad but ran into the wall not long after the start of the match and due to the position of the spinning weapon flipped Coffee Grinder over. Worst Nightmare won the match.
Fight 4
Worst Nightmare VS. Fruitcake
This was a very good match to watch. Fruitcake's blade was intimidating enough but proved it's real destructive capabilities in this match. Throughout most of the match I was trying my best to get to fruitcake's wheels so that maybe I could have a good chance to do some pushing but none of my ideas worked because the servos that Worst Nightmare is using for drive just weren't quick enough. As a result Worst Nightmare got hit with the fruitcake's spinning weapon many times. Towards the end of the match fruitcake got Worst Nightmare cornered at the wall and got a good shot at Worst Nightmare's Base plate and even flipped Worst Nightmare and cut the antenna and sawed away at my Cardboard/Carbon Fiber armor protecting the electronics, luckily the match ended right then because the time ran out. Worst Nightmare lost the match.
Beetleweight Rumble
To many bots to name but believe it or not with one wheel completely gone and the other one chopped in half, Worst Nightmare was the last robot that could still show and movement thus won the rumble.
NCRSF 4
This was our first competition we had ever attended with an actual bot. We brought our first robot, Chipper 2 and Worst Nightmare. There was an informal ant and beetle weight comp presented by Robot Power, which took place during the lunch break in which we fought Worst Nightmare.
Fight 1
Chipper 2 VS. Rabid Javalinas
Chipper 2 had to fight Rabid Javalinas in our first fight. at the start of the match we knew they would go for the wheels so I tried to stay clear of their blade but their small mutibots were like door stops on wheels and distracted me, in which then the big part of rabid Javalinas hit me several times and Chipper 2 just got the heck beat out of him for the remainder of the match and we lost. My wheels we torn to pieces and the antenna got cut but still worked as well as a few wires burnt from over voltage and a wire that came out of the mixer causing loss of power to one of the drive motors.
Fight 2
Chipper 2 VS. X1
Chipper 2 had to fight X1 in our second fight. The match started out good for Chipper 2 because X1 one was showing very bad driving skills as they ran from one end of the arena straight into another wall and so on. Chipper was getting a few hits though. Despite X1's driving they managed to get one or two good hits on me but I got more than a few good ones as well. Unfortunately though this was the first time that Chipper had shown good performance in combat and I had never ran the robot under these types of extreme conditions before. Thus my cheap emergency shut off switch made out of headphone connectors fell apart from one of the hard hits where Chipper's thwack arm and X1 both collided at full speed. Chipper was counted out and we lost the match.
